Using Linear Systems
There are many situations where simultaneous equations are needed to solve real-world problems. Some of those examples are below:
- Deciding whether an item is cheaper to buy online with additional shipping costs or to buy it locally.
- Deciding whether joining a CD music club which requires a monthly purchase is more cost effective than purchasing them when wanted.
- Deciding which phone plan is cheaper.
Example
Anne is trying to choose between two phone plans. The first plan, with Vendafone costs $20 per month, with calls costing an additional 25 cents per minute. The second company, Sellnet, charges $40 per month, but calls cost only 8 cents per minute. Which should she choose?
Step 1. Write an equation for each plan.
y = total cost of the plan and x = number of minutes
Vendafone: y = 0.25x + 20
Sellnet: y = 0.08x + 40
Step 2. Solve the system of equations using one of the methods discussed earlier.
The following is a graph representing the situation.
The intersection point is (117.65, 49.41)

Step 3. Solve the system of equations using one of the methods discussed earlier.
Another method would be substitution.
0.25x + 20 = 0.08x + 40
0.25x = 0.08x +20
0.17x = 20
x = 117.65
y = 0.25(117.65) + 20
y = 49.41
The solution point is (117.65, 49.41)
Step 4. Interpret the solution.
Annie's solution will depend on how many minutes she plans to talk. At 118 minutes the plans basically cost the same. Less than 118 minutes Vendafone is cheaper and greater than 118 minutes Sellnet is cheaper.
