1. Typing Programs for your Students

Your students are going to have to be good keyboarders, whether they are on a QWERTY keyboard or mobile device keyboard. The Next Generation Assessments are not just multiple choice assessments.

These assessments require students to demonstrate their knowledge in a variety of ways, several of which require students to type short and long text responses.

Here are some suggestions for getting your students up to the speed and accuracy they will need to feel comfortable when taking the online assessments.

2. Typing and Mousing Programs

The goal is to get your students typing at least 35 wpm (words per minute).

Try this site (typingtest.com) yourself first. How are your typing skills?

Here are several sites that we recommend for free to practice proper finger placement, speed and accuracy.

1.  Typing Club

2.  Typing Web

3. BBC typing games to practice from the BBC

4. Do your students need help with his/her mousing skills? Have them try out this simple mousing program on their computer.

You are now ready to move on to Module 2, which focuses on Michigan standards. You can begin by going to 2.1 Module 2 Overview.
